Mt. Nyiragongo, the country's active volcano in the northeast, lights up the town of Goma at night.  Nyiragongo erupted in 2002 killing 147 people and leaving over 100,000 homeless.

The North Kivu region of DRC is known for its beautiful rolling hills.  North Kivu has also been plagued by civil war since 1996.  The region houses multiple factions of rebel groups that continuously fight against Congo's National army the FARDC.

Separating Rwanda and DRC is Lake Kivu.  It covers an expanse of 2700km of total surface area and contains large deposits of methane.  The methane is currently being extracted by the Rwandan government and has highly increased their energy generation capability.  A boat from Goma, DRC travels in between the North Kivu province to Bukavu, the capital of the South Kivu province.

The wives of Sudanese cattle herders carry a heavy burden.  They care for their husbands and children as families walk hundreds of miles from Sudan to CAR.  The Sudanese bring their cattle into eastern CAR to graze from January to June because of Sudan's growing arid climate and recent conflicts.

On November 20 2012. a rebel group called M23 took control of the city of Goma in North Kivu, DRC.  These rebel soldiers originally belonged to the FARDC(DRC's national army), however they defected and started M23 due to "poor military conditions" and the breaking of an original treaty back in 2009.  This is a shot of an M23 platoon on patrol just after they took hold of Goma and the surrounding areas.

Standing is a Sudanese cattle herdsman that walked upward to 1000km in search of better grazing grounds.  Him and his family travel through eastern CAR every year with their cattle numbering into the hundreds.  The unfortunate side to their journey is that the men all carry AK-47's and are depleting the wildlife in eastern CAR at a rapid rate.

Sudanese ivory poachers will spend up to two years in the bush only huting elephants.  Since 1984, the CAR elephant populations have gone from around 60,000 to 2,000.  In the Chinko Basin there are only 100-200 left.  These few have retreated into the dense forest attempting to evade the intense pressure.

In 2011 the worst famine in 60 years hit east Africa.  It primarily affected the people of Somalia and caused a pouring in of refugees into Kenya.  Somalia has been in a state of conflict since the early 90's, another reason for the country's inability to provide support during that time.  In this picture a large warehouse of Somali refugees compete for space as they await for their weekly rations of food.  The crowds numbered in the hundreds.
